Book summary of a 60 second leadership

Sometimes we just have to step back and be thankful with what we see.

Most of the time we see our life from just inches away. By focusing too closely, our attention is in the wrong place and we tend to highlight what's wrong.
If we step back, we get the right perspective and tend to promote what's right.

Let's try to look at authors opinion in a more practical manner with an example.

Eg:- When we look at our car after a wash. Where do we stand?
Do we stand right in front or do we step back?

We all know the answer 😉

So, How do we step back?
Here is the author's suggestion.
1) Choose for 1 thing - be aware and decide often.
2) Change your environment. Find a getaway for you and your family.

Key Lesson:- In this chapter author advice the reader to take a step back in a while from their daily routine and find a getaway where they can connect and reflect to get the right perspective.

Conclusion:- Take a step back and analyze the situation from a different perspective. Find a getaway once in a while to connect and reflect on your life.

So, are you willing to step back and look through a different perspective???

Hello, readers let's start with our next chapter.

16. Stop with the Pronouns!!

Book summary of a 60 second leadership

We all have heard about these in our school. To those who were pretty good in English still remember what the pronoun is.

To those similar to me who had a hard time with grammar. Let's see what the pronoun is.

Pronoun:- It is a word that replaces a noun in a sentence.
Eg:- They are weak.
        They are uncaring.
        They are a pronoun.
Now, let's find out what the author is trying to tell us with an example.

Think about your leadership team interaction. You were talking, leading and strategizing.
When you came to the point of indirectly referencing one of your teammates, did you do so by name or pronoun?

Eg:- Take him with you on the next call.
Take John with you on the next call.

Now think which of this example make you feel better.
We all know the answer. Don't we 😉

Many leaders make this mistake often and we know they care but their words don't tell a caring story at times.

We all know what Dale Carnegie said in his book "How to Win Friends and Influence People".

" Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language".

Key Lesson:- Person's own name is the single most important word to him/her. Our name is intimately tied to our identity and value as a human being.

Conclusion:- Names matter.

A person's name- how you use it has a profound effect on their impressions of you.

Keep it personal by NAME when it comes to your family, team and friends.

15. Don't be the Magic

Book summary of a 60 second leadership

The title is so catchy. We must commend the author for such an eye-catching title. But, don't let the title fool you. It has profound meaning as we go deeper into the chapter you will understand what he is trying to tell.

Being the Magic, isn't it awesome?

When things need to be done, you step in as one person and make it happen.

Sounds good to hear. Isn't it?

But there is a problem with magic. When you leave, the magic leaves.

The magician is a prisoner of his own talent.

There is a misnomer we have been hearing throughout our life such as
One man show. Self-made man. One man can change the world.

But, if we look deep into the matter. We will realise it was not one man show, it was a group of people who made it.

One man cannot change the world but, that doesn't mean he can't spark the light.
It takes a group of people to make the change.
One man cannot change the world but, he can initiate the change.

Now let's get back to our topic "Magic".
It's not about being the magic. It's all about spreading the magic.
Now, you may be getting the point. Let's make it even more simple.

" Leadership is all about spreading the magic, not being the magic.

Key Lesson:- In this chapter author advice us to become a leader and develop other leaders who will lead others and cycle will continue. In long term, these will help a community or business to strive.

Conclusion:- Leadership is about spreading the magic, not being the magic.

Hello, reader, 🙋 Today's chapter is about the value of listening. Let's get started.

14. Stop Talking!

Book summary of a, libro, livro, kitap
Book summary of a 60 second leadership

When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new - Dalai Lama
People talk too much!! And on top of that, they ask very little. And when they do ask, its usually a setup for them to talk more.

We can all relate to what the author is saying. We can see that both in our personal and professional life.

If we analyze and be aware of ourself we do these often. Many times we fall under the same category.

Stephen Covey nailed it in his quote

"Most people do not listen with the intent to understand, they listen with the intent to reply"

Key Lesson:- Listen with your eyes while you talk I.e. be aware of the interest level of people. Ask questions. Learn from them.

Conclusion:- Be the listener, not the talker. Leave people wanting more, not wanting out. Listeners is the one who shows value and people move to where they feel valued.

13.The language of Choice

Book summary of a 60 second leadership

In this chapter, the author talks about Communication in a different way.
According to the author its, not the words that really communicate the message.

Learning to understand the behaviour is a true way of communication.

We tend to speak and act on the basis of our way of communicating, rather than considering that others are attempting the same thing but, communicating in their way and if we don't learn their ways, we will miss them all day long.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood

Understanding is the foundation of great communication.

Once we get our heart and head in the right perspective than we can use methods or tools such as DiSC or MBTI.

Here the author talks about tools he used which help him to define the behaviour style of people. To know more about this tool please read the book.

Key Lesson:- Author encourages us to learn more, understand more and apply more in the area of communication.Use tools such as DiSC or MBTI to understand behaviour assessment. Get this knowledge and apply it in your life.

Conclusion:- Understanding is the foundation of great communication.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood - Stephen Covey

Hello, readers🙋 Welcome back to the Bookodidact🙏 Here is another summary of the chapter. Enjoy 😉

12. Quiet Leadership

Book summary of a, book summary, book chapter summary, libro, livro ,kitap

Looking at the title I remembered another book named "Quiet" by Susain Cain. In that book, she talks about the power of introvert and how that can be used for leadership.

The starting of the book is quite amazing where Susain talks about a lady well known as Rosa Parks who started the civil right movement and then carried forward by Martin Luther King Jr. The amazing part of the story is that Mrs Parks was so quiet and calm lady who stood as a leader among the masses in spite of her introverted nature.

I recommend you all to go read that book and you will never look at leadership in the same manner.

So, today's chapter resembles with the book. Here the author talks about how leaders can come into different shapes and sizes.

He talks about his wife who stood as a leader and the amazing part is she doesn't call herself one.

Society tends to portray leaders as outgoing, driven, strong and decisive. It is certainly true in many cases. These type of leader is so visible and we think that's all leader is.

But, have we thought about leaders who don't see themselves and not do they want to. These are the quiet ones that aren't interested in the limelight and yet their sense of responsibility and respect they have with their peers and vision often lead them front.

To know more on this topic read "The Leader Who Had No Title" by Robin Sharma.

Key Lesson:- Leadership is Influence and influence is not limited to the outgoing(personality). It is about respect from those around us and respect has to be earned. That respect gets people's attention.

Conclusion:- Leadership is not about a title. Leaders can come from all walk of life, different shapes and sizes. Leadership is about influence and it comes from respect which gets people's attention.

11. Presentation Ain't as Important as Follow Through

Book summary of a 60 second leadership

The title itself reveals what this chapter is all about. In this chapter, the author talks about the importance of follow through. The word usually used in sales which many people know about.

Let's see what he is trying to tell.

We always see it in sales, the imaginative memorable proposal that amazes the potential buyers. Full of imagination, creativity all kind of stuff.

The author doesn't know how these proposals work out in long run but his sales approach was typically boring.

Just pick up the phone and call. He was passionate and committed but most important he always follows through, nurturing that relationship.

Nurturing the relationship(follows through)work in both personal and professional life. Here is an example.

Personal Life:- Marriage is all about nurturing the relationship. Staying consistent with small stuff in marriage such as giving detailed attention to your loved ones, be engaged with them, show them love and respect.

Professional Life:- Sales is all about nurturing the relationship. Keep in touch, add value, follow through your words, courteous and respectful.

Key Lesson:- It's ok to wow everyone with your way of presentation but makes sure you still pay attention to the small stuff by keeping your words and promises. Be consistent with providing value.

Conclusion:- Nurture the relationship. Don't regret the small stuff as in long run they will help you in many ways. Keep your promises.

So, how diligent are you with your follow through or are you more into presentation stuff??🤔😉
